It was with sword and battle-axe in hand that the ancestors of many bearers of the James name today first arrived on British shores.
This was through the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the defeat of the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, but in later centuries many have found fame through a diverse range of more peaceful endeavours and pursuits.
These include the distinguished British naval commander Sir William Milbourne James, who as a child was the subject of the pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais’s painting Bubbles, which became an iconic image for a soap brand and, on a note of infamy, the American Wild West outlaws Jesse and Frank James.
The stirring tale of bearers of the James name is recounted here.
