English Book - Jones

Derived from the personal name ‘John’, that in turn stems from the Latin ‘Johannes’, ‘Jones’ features prominently in the dramatic historical record of not only the British Isles but also much further afield.

With a family motto of ‘Without God, without anything’, famous bearers of the name include John Paul Jones, the Scots-born seaman recognised as ‘Father of the American Navy’, and the renowned late sixteenth to early seventeenth century English architect Inigo Jones – whose many impressive works include the design of Covent Garden, London.

Immortalised in The Ballad of Casey Jones, Casey Jones was the American railroad engineer who in 1900 sacrificed his own life to save that of others in a rail accident, while in the world of music David Robert Hayward was the best-selling musician, singer and songwriter better known as David Bowie.
