A huge debt is owed by the medical world to Sir James Young Simpson, born in Bathgate, in the east of Scotland, in 1811, and who pioneered the use of anaesthetics in surgical operations.
A landmark date in the history of medicine is January 19, 1847, when Simpson, who had studied at Edinburgh University, became the first to apply ether as an anaesthetic to reduce the pain of childbirth.
On a much different note, a family of Simpsons have for several years enjoyed international fame as stars of a popular American television series actually named after them.
Step forward the cartoon characters of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, known and loved as The Simpsons!
Chronicled here are the stirring lives and times of the Simpsons of both yesteryear and today.
