From poets and painters to statesmen and economists, Smiths have stamped an indelible mark on the world since the name made its first appearance in records in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Its origins stretch much further back in time, however, to those tribal members who were adept in the mysteries of forging and fashioning metals.

It was a rare and valuable skill, and ‘smith’ was the occupational name bestowed on them.

One Smith whose impact is felt to this day at an international level was the moral philosopher and pioneering economist Adam Smith. Born in 1723, the Scot was the author of Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, an examination of the development of industry and commerce in Europe that helped to lay the foundations of the discipline of economics.
