Although their origins are shrouded in colourful myth and legend, what is known with certainty is that the distant ancestors of the Foleys of today contributed in no small part to the rich tapestry that is Ireland’s history.
Frequently devastated by the fierce winds of war that swept over the island, they nevertheless managed to cling to their proud heritage and traditions.
In much more peaceful times, Clyde Foley, born in Kentucky in 1910, was the major star of American country music better known as Red Foley.
The recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the music industry, before his death in 1968 he had sold more than 25 million records that include the top hits Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy, Old Shep, Tennessee Saturday Night and Salty Dog Rag.
Recounted here is the dramatic tale of the Foleys of both yesteryear and today.
