Scottish Clan Book - Paterson

Bearers of a name whose origins can be traced back to the dark and distant fifth century, generations of Patersons have made their mark not only on the pages of Scotland’s rich and colourful story, but on the world at large.

As kinsfolk of the clansmen, they fought and died in the bloody struggles for the nation’s independence, the forlorn cause of the exiled Royal House of Stuart and for religious freedom.

In more peaceful times, Andrew Barton Paterson, better known as ‘Banjo’ Paterson, was the eldest son of a family from Lanarkshire, in Scotland, who left an enduring legacy in Australia, where his family had immigrated.

Born at Narambla, near Orange, New South Wales in 1864 he became a practising lawyer, but is better known as the poet responsible for penning the famous Waltzing Matilda.
