Although those who would come to bear the Dunbar name were originally settled in Northumbria, it is in Scotland that they have stamped an indelible mark on the historical record.

Taking their surname from the town of the name in East Lothian, over the centuries they were frequently found on the battlefield, while one particularly colourful and feisty character was Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar and March and better known to posterity as ‘Black Agnes’.

Left in charge of Dunbar Castle in September of 1338 while her husband Patrick of Dunbar was engaged in military duties elsewhere, she successfully held the stronghold against an English siege commanded by William Montague, 1st Earl of Salisbury.

Presented here is the dramatic saga of the Dunbars.
