Of Biblical roots and stemming from the Old Testament David, founder of the Royal House of David and also popularised in Wales through veneration of the mid to late sixth century Bishop David, canonised as a saint and later adopted as the nation’s patron saint, ‘Davies’ features prominently in the historical record from earliest times.
Of original Celtic pedigree, many of its bearers today have achieved high distinction and honours.
Three of the name were recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the face of enemy action for British and Commonwealth forces, while others have flourished through endeavours and pursuits that include politics, music and sport – with the Welsh former long jumper Lyn Davies winner of the gold medal in the event at the 1946 Olympics.
Their proud and inspiring tale is chronicled here.
