Although particularly identified with Wales, ‘Lloyd’ is nevertheless an equally common surname throughout England today.
Popularised in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066 – a pivotal moment in British history – the name also has much earlier roots that track back through the mists of time to the ancient Britons.
Many of the name have gained fame and distinction at an international level, with Edward Lloyd, born in London in about 1648, the founder of what became the famous Lloyd’s of London insurance and shipping business company.
In the world of politics, Welsh-born David Lloyd George was the charismatic Liberal Party politician who led Britain’s coalition government from 1916 to 1922.
On the stage, Matilda Alice Victoria Wood was the immensely popular late nineteenth and early twentieth century English actress, music hall singer and comedienne better known by her stage name of Marie Lloyd.
The stirring tale of the Lloyds is chronicled here.
