With their ancestors found in Wales from the earliest of times, bearers of the Watkins name today are heirs to a proud and colourful heritage.

While some have achieved distinction in endeavours ranging from military service to politics, others have found fame as poets, actors, musicians and through sport.

Born in 1896, Maurine Dallas Watkins was the American journalist, playwright and screenwriter whose most successful play, Chicago, enjoyed success as a musical after her death and, in 2002, as a film.

Also in the world of film, James Watkins is the award-winning British director and screenwriter whose credits include the 2012 The Woman in Black, while in the world of sport David Watkins, born in 1942, is the former Welsh rugby union international and recipient of an MBE for his services to the game who played rugby union and rugby league for Wales and for Great Britain between 1963 and 1974.

The inspiring tale of bearers of the Watkins name is presented here.
